Libby teaches privately out of her home in the Glenview district of
Oakland, Ca. She teaches all levels and all styles of piano players; all
levels and styles of singers and piano accordion players interested in
learning about celtic accordion playing as well as accompanying other
players on accordion. She occasionally will take on a beginning banjo
player in the clawhammer style of playing a 5-string banjo.
Libby has been teaching privately since 1980, with a steady clientele of
50 students a week for the last 25 years. Formal teaching training
came from teaching several years at The Caedmon School in NYC, a
pre-K through 8th grade Montessori school. Her approach to all ages
and levels of students is very Montessori based: create an environment
for students to be curious and self-motivated, with guidance and
inspiration given freely and gently. She has a great way with all
students, very supportive as well as being fun, funny, and interested in
knowing who her students are and what makes them tick musically.
Piano players who study with Libby learn how to: read music, play music
by ear, play in a wide variety of styles, study theory, study technique,
be an accompanist, play the blues, solo over jazz changes, read chords,
write original music.....
Singing students learn how to: find comfort and ease in their voices and vocal range, discover head tone and chest tone, strengthen their
voices, expand their range, sing in a variety of styles as well as
languages, understand singer related theory, scat sing over jazz songs,
explore pronunciation with consonants and vowels, posture and ease of
breath control while singing, tell the story as you sing a song making it
all ‘believable’.... Piano accordion students learn how to: understand the left hand buttons, begin to get around the keys with the right hand using simple
melodies, chords and inversions, accompany other instruments, take
solos, learn celtic tunes, learn how to play in several styles, read music,
Clawhammer banjo students learn how to: hold the banjo and play it
with the correct form, play chords, play melodies, ready banjo tablature,
